What it costs to adopt a dog
Puppy, adult and senior fees from shelters that publish them, read off their own pages — plus the reason the fee is usually less than the surgery it pays for.

Ask what a dog costs and most people mean the first payment, not the next fifteen years. There are two ways to make that payment, and only one of them has public prices. Shelters publish their own fee schedules — some of them as city ordinances — so the adoption side can be quoted exactly. Breeder prices are not collected anywhere credible, and we will not invent a range for them. This page is the side we can show honestly.
What shelters actually charge
We read the published fee page of 18 shelters and animal-control agencies, spread across all four census regions, and wrote the numbers down by hand. A middle-of-the-road organisation charges about $269 for a puppy, $161 for an adult and $93 for a senior. The spread is the real story: an adult dog costs $25 at City of Albuquerque Animal Welfare and $480 at Animal Rescue League of Boston — the same animal, the same paperwork, 19 times the price, decided by which side of the country the shelter is on and whether it is funded by a city budget or by donations.

One figure per organisation per tier, so a shelter with a long price list does not outvote the rest. Where a fee is billed unbundled, the comparison uses what the adopter actually pays.
Age is the strongest lever an adopter controls. Every organisation in the sample that prices by age charges less for an older dog, and the step down from puppy to senior is $176 at the median; Austin Animal Center hands over dogs over 7 years for nothing.

What the fee buys
The fee is not the price of the dog; it is a part-payment on work already done. 13 of the 18 organisations state that spay or neuter surgery is included, 13 include the microchip, and most include the first vaccines. Priced at the national vet rates this site uses everywhere else, that bundle — sterilisation at $471, core vaccines at $77, a heartworm test at $71 — comes to about $619.
So the median puppy fee of $269 is less than the sterilisation alone, and an adult at $161 covers about 26% of the work already paid for. A dog acquired any other way starts the first year with that $619 still ahead of it, which is the part of the comparison the sticker price hides.
When the fee is not the total
A minority of shelters quote a low fee and bill the surgery, the chip and the city licence separately. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Animal Care & Control is the clearest case: $70 on the fee line, but $175–$180 once the surgery, microchip and licence are added. Several others add a municipal dog licence of $10 to $34 that has nothing to do with the shelter. Compare totals, not fee lines — the table above already does.
Buying from a breeder
We publish no figure for this, on purpose. There is no public dataset of what US breeders charge. The "puppy price index" pages that rank near the top of this search are compilations of classified listings with no stated method, no sample and no way to check them; quoting one would put a number on this site that nobody can verify, which is the one thing this project does not do.
What is true and useful: breeder prices vary with the parents' health testing, the registry paperwork and how far you travel, and a breeder who health-tests both parents charges more than one who does not — that testing is also what shifts the odds on the conditions listed on each of our breed pages. Ask the breeder directly, ask what the price includes, and treat any national "average puppy price" you read as decoration.
Breed rescues charge more
A shelter takes whatever arrives; a breed rescue pulls one breed out of shelters, vets it and places it, and charges accordingly. For 6 breeds we found at least two rescues publishing a fee schedule, which is the bar for quoting a breed-specific number — one organisation is an anecdote.

Two rescues per breed, read on 2026-09-24. The gap at the top is the market talking: the same shelter that charges $161 for an adult dog has no French Bulldogs, and the rescue that does knows it.
What comes after the fee
Whichever way the dog arrives, the recurring cost is the same and it dwarfs the one-off. Put the breed and your state into the calculator to see the year, or the first-year tool for the front-loaded twelve months — the adoption fee belongs there as a one-off line, not in the yearly figure, which is why it is kept out of every annual and lifetime number on this site.
Sources and method
The sample is 18 organisations: 11 municipal or animal-control agencies and 7 humane societies, covering all four census regions so the range is not a coastal one. Each fee page was opened and recorded by hand on 2026-09-24; the Multnomah County figures come from the county fee ordinance itself. Organisations whose fee page sits behind a bot challenge are not in the sample — we do not work around those, so the sample grows slowly and honestly.
This is a sample of published prices, not a national average weighted by adoptions. It tells you what a shelter near you plausibly charges and how wide the spread is; it does not tell you what the average American paid.
