A Standard Poodle — 60–70 lb for males and 40–50 lb for females, non-sporting group, a top-ten breed by 2025 AKC registrations — costs a typical owner in Texas about $3,663 a year, or $2,359 to $4,631 depending on food, grooming and insurance. That is 13% above the $3,247 average for large breeds; the Basset Hound is the cheapest in the group and the Borzoi the dearest.
Food is the largest line at 26%. At 55 lb this dog needs about 1,407 kcal a day — roughly 26 lb of kibble a month — so brand and tier matter more than for a smaller dog: $832 to $1,013 a year across the standard kibbles we priced ($947 at the median), and several times that on fresh food. Insurance is the next line at 22%.
With a top-20 registration rank, breeders, breed-specific rescues and groomers who know the coat are easy to find. Males run about 20 lb heavier than females, which is enough to move a male into a higher parasite-prevention band — the panel's weight setting matters here. A high energy rating puts the calorie factor at 1.8× resting energy.
A curly, non-shedding coat is the classic hidden cost: it does not drop hair, so it must be clipped about every six weeks or it mats to the skin. At Texas prices that is 8 salon visits × $95, $738 a year — 20% of everything this dog costs.
First-year total: $4,661. Beyond the running costs that includes spay or neuter ($457 at Texas prices) and the puppy vaccine series with its extra visits. Expect to buy some gear twice: a large-breed puppy outgrows its first crate and bed within months, so the $205 first-month list is a floor, not a ceiling.
A Standard Poodle typically lives 14 years (a study of 584,734 UK dogs), so the lifetime figure of $52,514 is driven by the long tail: 6 senior years at about $3,702 each rather than $3,663.
