A Komondor — 100–100 lb for males and 80–80 lb for females, working group, ranked No. 185 of 202 by 2025 AKC registrations — costs a typical owner in Texas about $4,133 a year, or $2,762 to $5,076 depending on food, grooming and insurance. That is 13% above the $3,671 average for giant breeds; the Great Pyrenees is the cheapest in the group and the Black Russian Terrier the dearest.

Food is the largest line at 29%. At 90 lb this dog needs about 1,809 kcal a day — roughly 33 lb of kibble a month — so brand and tier matter more than for a smaller dog: $1,070 to $1,302 a year across the standard kibbles we priced ($1,218 at the median), and several times that on fresh food. Insurance is the next line at 20%.

At No. 185 of 202 it is a rare breed in the US; the yearly figures here come from its size and coat, not from breed-specific price data, which does not exist for breeds this uncommon. Males run about 20 lb heavier than females, which is enough to move a male into a higher parasite-prevention band — the panel's weight setting matters here. No breed-level survival study covers it, so the 9.51-year figure is the US life expectancy for giant dogs; the AKC quotes 10–12 years.

A curly, non-shedding coat is the classic hidden cost: it does not drop hair, so it must be clipped about every six weeks or it mats to the skin. At Texas prices that is 8 salon visits × $120, $932 a year — 23% of everything this dog costs.

First-year total: $5,156. Beyond the running costs that includes spay or neuter ($457 at Texas prices) and the puppy vaccine series with its extra visits. A giant-breed puppy outgrows everything: crate, bed, collar and harness are all bought at least twice, so treat the $230 first-month list as the first of two rounds.

The median lifespan of 9.51 years (the US life-expectancy figure for its size group) is short, which keeps the lifetime total at $40,474 even though the yearly cost is above average. Only about 2 of those years are senior years, each adding $97 in extra check-ups and bloodwork.
