A German Shepherd Dog — 65–90 lb for males and 50–70 lb for females, herding group, one of the five most-registered breeds in the US in 2025 — costs a typical owner in Texas about $3,247 a year, or $2,100 to $3,420 depending on food, grooming and insurance. That is almost exactly the average for large breeds ($3,247), between the Basset Hound and the Borzoi.
Food is the largest line at 38%. At 68.8 lb this dog needs about 1,848 kcal a day — roughly 34 lb of kibble a month — so brand and tier matter more than for a smaller dog: $1,093 to $1,331 a year across the standard kibbles we priced ($1,245 at the median), and several times that on fresh food. Insurance is the next line at 25%.
With a top-20 registration rank, breeders, breed-specific rescues and groomers who know the coat are easy to find. Males run about 18 lb heavier than females, which is enough to move a male into a higher parasite-prevention band — the panel's weight setting matters here. The AKC rates its energy at the top of the scale, so the calorie factor is 2× resting energy — a working-dog appetite in a large body. The AKC quotes 12–14 years for the breed; the study median used here (11.3) is lower, because it counts every dog under veterinary care rather than a well-kept ideal.
A short double coat sheds hard twice a year but needs no clipping; most owners manage with a de-shedding brush and a few baths. Salon visits are optional — the $24 shown assumes home grooming only.
First-year total: $4,245. Beyond the running costs that includes spay or neuter ($457 at Texas prices) and the puppy vaccine series with its extra visits. Expect to buy some gear twice: a large-breed puppy outgrows its first crate and bed within months, so the $205 first-month list is a floor, not a ceiling.
Over a 11.3-year median lifespan (a study of 584,734 UK dogs) the total is $37,277; the final 3 years run about $3,122 each once senior exams and bloodwork are added.
